Skin is made up of many layers, each of which has unique characteristics and performs critical functions. The epidermis is the visible top layer of the skin that protects the body. The dermis is the thick second layer. It contains sweat and oil glands, hair follicles, nerve endings, and the important structural proteins collagen and elastin.
